Dairy Queen

SUMMARY IF YOU SPEAK COW THEN MOOMMARY

At fifteen years old, D.J. Schwenk has become responsible for her families dairy farm. Her dad slipped and injured his hip, leaving him unable to do anything physical. Her two older brothers left the farm angrily after having a fight with their dad and are now pursuing college football careers. As the oldest sibling left on the farm DJ has to do most of the heavy work like milking, mowing and haying. She’s given up playing basketball for her high school team in small town Red Bend and no longer runs for the track team. She’s also failing English because she hasn’t had time to write all the required essays. DJ has been taught by example that is true, worthy Schwenks don’t quit, talk back or whine, so she just keeps working. Her resentment towards her family silently grows, even though she is a practical girl who understands that she has to take care of the farm so that the family can survive economically.

The conflict in the novel is mainly Brian's attitude. On page 32, Brian and his obnoxius friends started mooing at D.J. and calling her Dairy Queen. This iritates her and makes her hate Brian twice as much as she did before. Further more, this tragic event eventually leads to D.J. being distracted and she preforms less farmwork. And no farm means no moneny for the Schwenk family.  In conclusion, this cycle wouldn't have started if Brian had just kept his mouth shut. The type of  conflict is person vs. person. But her brothers Win and Bill also made a huge difference on the conflict by leaving the farm to D.J. while they are just making their football dreams come true which ruins D.J.'s dream.

The motivaion progonists Win and Bill, is to leave the farm to D.J. and her injured father and go off to start a suitable career while they leave their troubled family alone as they are struggling physically and economically. And D.J. now has to tend the entire farm, all by herself.

The motivation of the antagonist D.J. is to keep the farm alive and to never give up on her dreams and her troubled family as well. She tries to never give up even in these grueling times. Some may think that this is even impossible.

The climax of the novel is when D.J. and Brian fall in love and it suddenly becomes a romance novel. I also think this is the climax becuase you would never expect a tough farm girl and  a prissy rich boy to fall in love for the rest of the novel. This also makes the book kind of bad because almost all teens books are about romance (like twight) and for once this book wasn't until they suddenly fall in love after hating eachother.  I know it surprised me and it will probably surprise you.

The out come of the novel was that the whole time D.J. was writing her strange story as a English project for school and her whole life was turned upside down at first and when Brian came along it made her life even worse and strangly he started feeling sorry for her and they fell in love and they started playing football together and like most books end; they lived happily ever after.
